So when will my video be ready?

Let’s talk about food. There are different kinds of food that take different amounts of time to cook. There’s the grab-and-go hot dogs, the microwave meatball leftovers, the stove-top stir-fry, the oven-baked chicken, the barbecued steak, the smoked ribs… All different kinds of meat, all different times to cook, all different outcomes and flavors. Much in the same way, making videos takes time. How much time it takes depends on what needs to be done. It’s still a video, but each method will bring a different result and take a different amount of time.

Three stages to making a video

No matter how much time you allocate to each stage, there are always three stages to making a video. These stages are not necessarily equal, and different projects will require different amounts of time in each. But you can’t get around these three stages: pre-production, production, and post-production. Let’s briefly look at all three.

Pre-production stage of video

First is pre-production, which is the planning stage. This is always first and may or may not take long, but at every level of video there is always even a minimal amount of planning. Some videos may take minutes to prep, like a live IGTV or Facebook video. Others take hours, days, and weeks to plan. In big productions some videos, movies, or documentary films take months to think about or years to dream about…that’s all part of the pre-production stage. Basically, it’s everything that happens before you hit “Record” for the first time.

For our clients we’ve generally ranged between a few hours of phone calls and emails for prepping a shoot to a month of face-to-face meetings to go over details and approve ideas and finalize decisions. The point of pre-production is to get everyone on the same page and make sure everyone is prepared so that you don’t have a big “Oops…should have thought through that one better.”

Production stage of video

The production stage is actually the shortest part of the entire process and can be anywhere from 15 minutes to a few days. This is where the project comes to life and we capture all our ideas on film and get something tangible on the table.

Post-production stage of video

The last stage of making a video is post-production. The timeline for this stage on a typical project is 2-6 weeks. The more pre-production that happens, the smoother post-production will go. But you know what? Our job is to make you look good no matter what, whether that means more time spent in pre-production or more time spent in editing. So it’s a win-win for you. Of course we always recommend more time in pre-production for everyone’s sake so that we’re all on the same page and the back-end will go faster, but it’s amazing how much magic can happen in editing and how much a video is affected by good editing.
